Frozen shoulder during menopause (and how to take CBD for this)
Did you know that changing hormones can contribute to an achy shoulder? Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is when tissue surrounding the shoulder joint gets inflamed, which can instigate pain and issues with rotating the joint. New findings posit that this can affect women between the ages of 40-60 – and potentially from wavering hormone levels! Baked Goods explains in this new post.
What is frozen shoulder during menopause?
Menopause happens when a woman’s period ends; but before this, perimenopause begins. Perimenopause comes with a plethora of symptoms and can last a few months to a decade prior to entering menopause.
In the female body, estrogen fosters the functioning of bones, brain, cardiovascular health, metabolism, and sleep. Lacking estrogen during perimenopause and menopause is linked to reductions of collagen and synovial fluid (lubricating joint fluid), which can lead to achy joints and frozen shoulder.
Frozen shoulder is temporary, but it’s to your advantage to see your doctor about this. This is to rule out underlying issues and to discuss other therapeutic interventions, including physiotherapy. You can also ask your doctor about supplementing with CBD. CBD may be beneficial as an additional supportive tool – it will not cure frozen shoulder, but it has the potential to help manage the pain.
How to use CBD for this issue
CBD may come with drug interactions (OTC and prescription), which is another reason to discuss taking it with your doctor. If you get the go-ahead, you can try CBD in these ways:
- Rub a topical (i.e. salve) onto the affected areas
- Add drops of CBD oil under the tongue
- Take a bath with a CBD bath bomb
- Mix CBD infused oil or honey into a tea
- Consume CBD edibles as need be.
