Menopause and inflammation: Is there a link?
Did you know that inflammation can form due to menopause? This can trigger a cascade of symptoms, such as joint pain, digestive issues, and mood swings, during this “change in life”. Baked Goods describes the relationship between menopause and inflammation, and how CBD may be beneficial for this.
How Menopause and Inflammation are Linked
During menopause, estrogen declines in the female body. This hormonal drop can encourage inflammation to form – but why would this happen anyway? Well, estrogen receptors are located in each organ in the female body. This means when low amounts of estrogen are produced, inflammation can affect your eyes, heart, joints and more. “Chronic inflammation increases as part of the aging process. As our cells lose their efficiency due to aging, inflammation naturally increases,” reports The ‘Pause Life by Dr. Marie Claire Haver. “Estrogen is protective against chronic inflammation – and when our levels start naturally declining in midlife during perimenopause, chronic inflammation increases again.”
Key Tips to Lower Inflammation During Menopause
- Eat an anti-inflammatory diet: Cut back on foods that exacerbate inflammation, such as those containing saturated fats, processed ingredients, and sugars. Learn more about healthy eating from Harvard Medical School.
- Manage stress levels: Stress has been shown to affect the immune system and induce inflammation. So, try out new relaxation techniques, such as meditation, art or yoga, or take up a new sport!
- Try CBD: CBD contains anti-inflammatory properties. By targeting the endocannabinoid system, it can help reduce inflammation by scavenging free radicals. CBD can be easily added to your routine in the form of capsules, edibles, sublingual oils, and more.
- Reduce your alcohol intake: Studies have shown that alcohol encourages the formation of inflammation, especially in the gut. Instead of having your evening glass of wine, why not make a fresh mocktail with CBD?
