How to Give CBD to Your Cat – Without the Battle!
If you’ve given your cat medicine before, then you know this can lead to a scratching battle! Cats are sensitive to tastes, scents, and routines – and sometimes administering CBD to them requires a touch of strategy.
CBD, especially from the hemp plant, may be useful for felines due to its anti-inflammatory, calming effects. Below, Baked Goods highlights easy tips to make pet CBD administration an efficient process.
- Choose pet-friendly CBD oils. CBD for cats typically comes in oils or treats, but not all cats will accept both. Pet-friendly oils offer flexibility with dosing; however, some cats might dislike the taste. If that’s the case, consider an unflavored option.
- Mix CBD into your pet food. Blending CBD directly into food is simple! Add the recommended dose to a small portion of your cat’s favorite food or treat. This can help mask new tastes and/or prevent any anxiety to new flavours. Just make sure your kitty eats the full portion so that the full dose is ingested.
- Use the “paw method”. If your cat is picky, try the “paw method”. All you need to do is place a small drop of CBD oil onto their paw. Cats intuitively groom themselves, so they’ll lick it off without much fuss. It’s not ideal for precise dosing, but it’s a valuable workaround.
- Be patient. Some cats accept CBD right away; others might take a few days to warm up to it. Avoid forcing the process, as this can create negative associations.
Another option to consider is direct administration, but this depends on timing and your comfort level. Choose a calm moment – never when your cat is already antsy! You can gently hold them, tilt their head slightly, and place the oil along the side of the mouth (not straight down the throat). Follow up with a treat to promote positive feelings.
If your cat is experiencing anxiety, chronic pain, and aging symptoms, hemp-based CBD is recommended, as it contains less than 0.3% THC. Baked Goods currently has Feline Purrrfect on the menu, which contains hemp CBD isolate and coconut oil – two ingredients that can be safely ingested by felines. And don’t worry, extra flavours are not added because we know pets can be fussy eaters! Just a reminder, please check in with your vet to determine if CBD is suitable for your cat, as CBD can potentially cause drug interactions.
