Top Summer Tips to Keep Your Dog Healthy (and Cool!)

You might have beach trips scheduled for this summer – but don’t forget to keep your dog safe in the heat, too! Sometimes gentle reminders can help us stay on track with pet care. With that, Baked Goods has compiled some tips to keep your dog comfortable and healthy for the summer months:

  • Keep your dog hydrated: All pets must have constant access to fresh water. Keep multiple bowls around your home and when you go for walks, give your pet frequent sips of water from a portable bowl.
  • Do NOT leave your dog in a car unattended: Leaving your dog in a hot car severely up their risks for heat stroke. Even if you suspect that your errand will be quick, bring your dog with you indoors. Read more about pets and cars in this post from the Toronto Humane Society.
  • Watch out for symptoms of heat stroke: If your pup suddenly comes down with these symptoms, especially after heat exposure, take them to the vet’s immediately: lethargy, diarrhea, seizures, vomiting, excessively drooling and panting.
  • Provide lots of shade: There are plenty of ways to boost shading, especially around your yard! For example, you can use umbrellas, canopies, awnings, and even bedsheets for DIY shade.
  • Continue regular grooming practices: To reduce discomforts from warm weather, keep up with grooming. Regular brushing can improve air circulation to help keep cool. Also, find a pet-friendly moisturizer for the paws, as hot pavements can cause irritations.
  • Consider CBD supplementation: Especially if you’re travelling with your furry BFF, CBD oil may be beneficial for supporting your dog’s pain relief and reducing anxiety from new people and places. The size of your dog matters when acclimating to warm weather. Larger dogs may be more affected by the heat, as their bodies may have difficulties regulating body temperature in the summer. Overall, it’s always advantageous to consult with your vet about keeping your pet comfortable in the heat. We also advise asking your vet if CBD is suitable for your dog, as administering it can potentially come with medication interactions.
