Need to destress RIGHT NOW? Try these tips from Baked Goods

Heated moments of stress can prevent us from thinking clearly. What can you do when this happens? Baked Goods offers insight.

Quick tips to relieve last-minute stress

Each person responds to unpredictability differently. Some people get triggered by the news, rude drivers, heavy paperwork, and such, which can lead to ruminating thoughts.

But when panic creeps up, there are things you can do to temporarily ‘snap’ yourself out of stress! Some of the tips below appear to be simple, but they can help you calm down to support mental clarity:

  1. Studies have shown that regularly eating processed foods and sugars can heighten stress levels. So, when a bout of panic hits, make yourself a healthy meal or snack.
  2. Go for a walk at your own pace. This brief exercise can boost both oxygen and blood flow to the brain. The change of scenery can also help collect your thoughts.
  3. Learn how to do deep breathing, as it can slow down your heart rate and promote relaxation. If you’re new to this, you can try these breathing techniques from WebMD
  4. Get a good belly laugh! Find your favorite movie or tv show clip and watch it. Laughter has been shown to lower blood pressure and boost feel-good endorphins.

For concerns about stress management and mental health, we recommend consulting with a mental health practitioner (i.e. psychotherapist). This practitioner can potentially give feedback on underlying issues and offer additional coping resources (i.e. cognitive behavioral therapy).
