When NOT to use CBD
Did you know that there are times when CBD should not be consumed? The makers behind Baked Goods explain in this article.
According to Harvard Medical School, CBD users should be aware of combining CBD with other therapeutic agents to avoid “doubling up” on side effects. For some people, CBD can cause drowsiness and other unwanted side effects (i.e. nausea, dry mouth). But when mixed with substances that can cause comparable effects, side effects can be riskily increased.
What’s important to note is that CBD can “compete” with other medications to be broken down by enzymes within the liver. This can impact the effectiveness of absorbing medications, too.
These CBD medication interactions can occur with both over-the-counter and prescription usages, “…such as opioids, benzodiazepines (such as Xanax or Ativan), antipsychotics, antidepressants, antihistamines (such as Benadryl), or alcohol…,” confirms Harvard Medical School. Also, some herbs (i.e. St. John’s wort), NSAIDS, melatonin, blood thinners, stimulants and heart prescriptions can lead to undesirable interactions with CBD.
This is why we advise on visiting your healthcare provider or pharmacist to determine if CBD is suitable for you. And when you start CBD, keep the “start low, go slow” mentality in mind: start at a low dose and, if need be, slowly increase your dose. This will help you determine the dose you need to help provide relief.
So, whenever you’re unsure about taking CBD – or any other therapeutic substance – please keep a close eye on your medication interactions with the help of a health provider.
