Thinking about trying CBD? Education can help us make choices about CBD ingredients, dosing, timing, etc., which is why we post articles in our Baked Goods CBD blog. So, as you read about CBD, you’ll likely come across some new lingo – don’t worry, we’ve got your back! Below, we’ve listed some key words you may come across:

  • Broad spectrum: A term to describe a product that contains CBD, terpenes, and other healthy cannabinoids – except for THC.
  • Cannabis: Also called marijuana; this plant contains psychoactive components (i.e. THC) and smaller amounts of CBD; it may be used responsibly for recreational or therapeutic purposes.
  • CBD: Short for cannabidiol; this is a component from hemp and cannabis plants that doesn’t cause psychoactive effects. Large amounts of CBD are found in the hemp plant; cannabis tends to contain less CBD than hemp.
  • CBG: Short for cannabigerol; small amounts of CBG can be extracted from the hemp and cannabis plant, and it doesn’t cause euphoria; it may be suitable for managing mood and chronic pain.
  • CBN: Short for cannabinol, it may provide neuroprotective effects and it may be suitable for promoting sedation/sleep. Please read more about CBN here.
  • Endocannabinoid system: Also known as the ECS, it’s a bodily system that helps sustain balance with other bodily processes, which may help regulate appetite, immunity, sleep, etc.
  • Entourage effect: Describes how multiple cannabinoids, such as CBD and THC, team up to create a stronger therapeutic effect.  You can read more about the entourage effect here.
  • Full spectrum: Describes a product that contains all of the cannabinoids and terpenes from a plant, including THC.
  • Hemp: Hemp is considered to be a ‘cousin’ of marijuana with less than 0.3% THC; CBD is usually extracted from the hemp plant.
  • Hemp seed oil: Hemp seed oil does not contain CBD and may be used as a cooking oil, salad dressing or omega-3 supplement.
  • Isolate: A form of CBD that is extracted on its own, without THC and other cannabinoids. It’s available in a powder-like form to be mixed for oils, edibles, topicals, etc.
  • THC: Short for tetrahydrocannabinol, this cannabis component can cause euphoria; the hemp plant contains miniscule amounts of THC.

CBD can offer several advantages, helping to reduce inflammation and joint pain. Please speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any CBD products, especially to avoid medication interactions.
