When should you NOT give CBD oil to your pet? Baked Goods responds

Many pet parents give their animals CBD for stress, mobility issues, and age-related discomforts. Though people focus on CBD’s beneficial effects, it’s just as important to understand when it’s NOT suitable to give an animal CBD. Like any new supplement, CBD should be used thoughtfully. Here, Baked Goods briefly lists when CBD is not advised for animal use.

CBD should not be given to your pet when …

  1. It’s already on certain medications: CBD is processed in the liver using enzyme pathways that are also responsible for metabolizing some veterinary drugs. This means CBD can potentially change how medications are absorbed or cleared. Drugs discussed in this context include anti-seizure medications, pain medications, and some heart and anxiety drugs.
  2. Your pet has elevated liver enzymes or liver disease: Because CBD is metabolized in the liver, pets with liver disease or impaired liver function may be at higher risk for unwanted effects.
  3. Your pet is young, pregnant, or nursing: CBD is not well studied in puppies, kittens, pregnant animals, or nursing mothers. During these life stages, the nervous system and organs are still developing.
  4. Your pet is sensitive to supplements: Some pets are more sensitive to new supplements and may get side effects from CBD, such as excessive drowsiness, digestive issues, or changes in appetite. If your pet has previously reacted poorly to supplements or medications, caution is advised.
  5. Symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening: If a pet is experiencing sudden pain, rapid behavioural changes, difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, or loss of appetite, CBD is not an appropriate first response. Please consider an emergency vet visit instead.

If you’re interested in CBD for your dog or cat, please consult with your veterinarian first. This is beneficial for ruling out underlying conditions and to determine if CBD can be ingested by your pet. Comprehending the pros and cons of treatments, especially when administering CBD oil to your pet, can go a long way. CBD is not a ‘cure’ or a ‘quick fix’ – it should be used in conjunction with regular vet visits, healthy eating, and exercise.
