Understanding CBD As a Holistic Approach to Menopausal Acne
Menopause marks the end of reproductive years in women, but it can bring about unforeseen changes — like menopausal acne! Below, Baked Goods explains how CBD may be handy for this.
Why does menopausal acne happen?
During menopause, fluctuating hormones can affect the sebaceous glands, leading to excessive sebum production and clogged pores. Ironically, your skin can become drier and more sensitive from reduced collagen levels and slower cell turnover. This oily-yet-delicate combination can make it difficult to treat acne. Plus, stress and poor sleep – which often come with menopause! – can contribute to worsening inflammation and breakouts. When added to healthy daily routines and regular checkups, CBD can be beneficial for helping to treat menopausal acne.
CBD’s role in supporting skin care
CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a major role in balancing physiological processes – including skin health. In fact, your skin already contains its own cannabinoid receptors that help regulate sebum production, inflammation, and cell regeneration. Taking CBD for menopausal acne may be supportive in these ways:
- It might help regulate oil production: One study found that CBD can inhibit excess oil production by soothing overactive sebaceous glands. This helps prevent blocked pores and lower acne formations.
- It may lessen inflammation: Due to CBD’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it could potentially relieve redness, swelling, and irritation, helping to calm down skin.
- CBD could promote antibacterial effects: CBD may help limit the production of bacteria linked to acne breakouts; it may also support wound healing, potentially reducing pigmentation over time.
CBD can be applied topically or ingested via edibles, oils, capsules, etc. Depending on your current condition though, taking it may come with medication interactions. We encourage you to be responsible with your intake of supplements – please contact a healthcare professional (i.e. medical doctor, nurse practitioner, etc.) to understand if CBD is suitable for your needs.
