Shoveling Snow Safely: Preventing Injuries and Using CBD for Recovery

It’s that time of the year when we MUST do this one task: shovel snow. It may seem like a simple chore, but snow shoveling is a full-body workout that can strain muscles, joints, and heart health.

Unfortunately, thousands of Canadians get injured annually from this duty, with sore backs and shoulder strains to serious slips and falls. But mindful movements, preparation, and recovery tools can aid with improving bodily resilience.

Below, Baked Goods lists some snow-shoveling tips, and how taking CBD may be beneficial.

  1. Think of shoveling like a type of exercise – it involves repetitive motions and can strain cold muscles. So gently warm up before you head outdoors! Try arm circles, leg swings, marching in place – warming up increases blood flow to your muscles and helps prevent back and shoulder strains.
  2. Proper technique matters – when you lift the shovel, bend at the knees, keep your back straight and do NOT bend at the waist. Try to avoid twisting your torso; turn your whole body instead. Also, smaller amounts of snow are ideal, rather than overloading the shovel!
  3. Give yourself a break every 10-15 minutes, especially during heavy snowfalls. Listen to your body – stay hydrated and stop immediately if you feel dizzy or get chest pains.
  4. Remember, this is a workout – after you’re done shoveling, stretch your back, shoulders and hamstrings, and take a hot bath. This can help improve circulation and recovery.
  5. Finally, give CBD a try! Hemp CBD cannot get you ‘high’ so it’s possible to supplement with it before you begin shoveling duties. You can try rubbing on a topical, drink a hot tea with Baked Goods CBD honey, or even throw a bath bomb into your bath to prevent pain!

By keeping these tips in mind, you might be able to prevent or improve recovery from slips, trips and falls. Let us know if you have any questions on our artisanal oils, granola bars, pet products, and more.
