6 Common Myths About CBD for Pets

CBD is a popular wellness tool for pets – but as interest grows, so does misinformation. Baked Goods demystifies some common myths about using CBD for dogs and cats.

Myth #1: CBD makes your pet ‘high’. The compound responsible for euphoric effects is THC, which should never be administered to pets or added to pet products. CBD does not cause a ‘high’. But if combined with THC and given to a pet, there’s a chance that it can lead to harmful effects. CBD formulated for animals, like our Barked Goods CBD oil, does not contain THC.

Myth #2: It will sedate your animal. If your pet seems overly drowsy from CBD, it’s possible that your dose is too high. CBD supports the endocannabinoid system to help regulate stress, inflammation and pain. Many pets remain alert and playful while taking CBD – they may just appear more at ease.

Myth #3: A higher dose means quicker and better results. False! Increasing the dose quickly in animals can potentially cause mild side effects, like lethargy or diarrhea. Starting low and gradually increasing the dose allows you to pinpoint an effective amount.

Myth #4: CBD works for my dog, so it’ll work for my friend’s dog, too. Size, age, metabolism, health status, and stress levels can impact how a pet responds to CBD. This is why individualized doses are needed.

Myth #5: CBD replaces veterinary care. CBD can lead to beneficial results, but this doesn’t mean you should stop taking your dog or cat to the vet. CBD is not a cure and should never replace veterinary treatment and prescription medications. It should be viewed as a complementary tool for potentially supporting comfort and balance.

Myth #6: You can use your personal CBD products on your pet. Dogs and cats cannot ingest the same ingredients as humans. For example, combining CBD with palm oil can lead to digestive discomforts in pets, like diarrhea. If you’re shopping for pet CBD oil, make sure it’s designed for animal ingestion! At Baked Goods, our pet CBD oils only use coconut oil, which is healthy and safe for both dogs and cats.

As a gentle reminder, speak to your veterinarian to determine if CBD is suitable for your pet. If you have any more questions about our products for yourself or your pet, contact us anytime.
